Bringing home a new baby comes with plenty of joyful moments, but it can also come with some unexpected discomfort. As your body adjusts to producing milk, you may experience breast engorgement, breast swelling, tenderness, or even clogged milk ducts. While these issues are common, that doesn’t mean you have to simply wait them out.
At Via Medical Massage, our therapists specialize in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and pregnancy and postpartum massage, offering gentle techniques designed to support your body’s natural healing process. For many new moms, manual lymphatic drainage massage can be a valuable addition to their postpartum recovery plan.
Let’s look at how MLD works for breastfeeding moms and what to expect when you get a session booked with Via Medical Massage.
What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialized massage technique that uses light, rhythmic movements to encourage lymph fluid to move more efficiently throughout the body. Unlike deep tissue massage, MLD uses extremely gentle pressure because the lymphatic vessels sit just beneath the skin.
During the postpartum period, your body is still recovering from pregnancy and childbirth. Hormonal changes, fluid retention, and increased blood flow can contribute to swelling in many areas, including the breasts.
By helping reduce excess fluid, manual lymphatic drainage massage may improve comfort while supporting the body’s natural recovery.

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage for Breastfeeding May Help
Breastfeeding places new demands on your body, and sometimes your breasts need a little extra support.
Breast Engorgement
Breast engorgement happens when the breasts become overly full with milk, blood, and other fluids. They may feel hard, swollen, warm, and painful.
While feeding or pumping is the primary way to relieve engorgement, lymphatic drainage for breastfeeding may help reduce excess swelling surrounding the breast tissue. Less swelling can make it easier for your baby to latch while improving your overall comfort.
Breast Swelling
Not all breast fullness is caused by milk alone. Extra fluid can also collect within the surrounding tissues after birth. By encouraging lymphatic circulation, manual lymphatic drainage may help reduce breast swelling, allowing the breasts to feel softer and less tight between feedings.
Clogged Milk Ducts
Although clogged milk ducts are typically caused by milk that isn’t draining efficiently, surrounding inflammation and swelling can make the problem worse.
Gentle breastfeeding massage techniques and manual lymphatic drainage may help reduce tissue congestion around the affected area, supporting normal milk drainage while improving comfort. It’s important to note that current recommendations favor gentle techniques over aggressive massage, which may increase inflammation.
Supporting Comfortable Milk Flow
Many moms wonder if massage can improve milk flow. While MLD does not increase milk production, reducing swelling around the milk ducts may help milk move more comfortably through the breast. For some women, this can make nursing or pumping feel easier while reducing discomfort caused by pressure.
Why Gentle Breastfeeding Massage Matters
Years ago, guidance encouraged firm pressure to “work out” clogged ducts. Today, healthcare providers and lactation experts generally recommend much gentler techniques.
Aggressive massage may actually increase inflammation or damage delicate breast tissue. That’s one reason manual lymphatic drainage massage keeps growing as an increasingly recognized option during the postpartum period. The treatment focuses on supporting the lymphatic system with slow, gentle movements rather than forceful pressure.
At Via Medical Massage, our therapists understand the unique changes your body experiences during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and breastfeeding. Every session gets tailored to your comfort level and individual needs.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage Is Just One Part of Breastfeeding Support
While manual lymphatic drainage for breastfeeding can provide welcome relief, it works best alongside other healthy breastfeeding habits.
Continuing to nurse or pump regularly, staying hydrated, wearing a supportive bra that isn’t overly restrictive, and working with a lactation consultant when needed all play important roles in reducing discomfort.
If you develop severe pain, fever, flu-like symptoms, or signs of infection, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider promptly, as these may be signs of mastitis or another medical condition requiring treatment. We can also work with your healthcare team to get the best results for all your health and recovery needs.
We can also help recommend products to aid in breastfeeding discomfort or related challenges. How KT Tape Can Be Used In Addition to MLD During Breastfeeding
For some breastfeeding mothers, KT Tape (kinesiology tape) may be used as a complement to Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). Applied by a trained therapist, the flexible tape gently lifts the skin, creating a small amount of space that may help encourage lymphatic fluid movement between treatment sessions.
When used appropriately, KT Tape may help manage breast swelling, engorgement, and discomfort while allowing moms to continue their normal daily activities, including breastfeeding. It isn’t a replacement for MLD or lactation support, but it can be a helpful addition to a comprehensive treatment plan.
Not every breastfeeding parent is a candidate for KT Tape. Your therapist will evaluate your symptoms, skin sensitivity, and treatment goals to determine whether it’s an appropriate option for you.
