Bringing a baby into the world is a full-body experience. Recovery does not stop when you leave the hospital. For many women, that is when the real physical work begins. Between healing tissue, shifting hormones, sleep deprivation, and the constant demands of a newborn, your body is doing more than most people realize.

Postpartum massage is not a luxury add-on. It is one of the most practical ways to support recovery, reduce discomfort, and help your body reset after pregnancy and delivery. At Via Medical Massage, the approach is focused and intentional. Every technique is chosen based on what your body actually needs in this phase.

4 Ways Postpartum Massage Helps

When we talk about the benefits of postpartum massage, it’s important to know that it’s not just something that helps one area of healing. There are at least four ways that massage can benefit a woman after she gives birth.

Lymphatic Drainage for Swelling and Lactation Support

Swelling after pregnancy is common, especially in the legs and feet. Your body has been holding onto extra fluid for months, and it does not always leave quickly. Add in hormonal shifts and reduced movement during recovery, and fluid can linger longer than expected.

Manual lymphatic drainage, or MLD, helps move that fluid out more efficiently. It is a light, rhythmic technique that encourages your lymphatic system to do its job. Many women notice reduced swelling in the ankles, feet, and even hands after just a few sessions.

There is also a connection to lactation that often gets overlooked. By improving circulation and reducing congestion in the chest and upper body, lymphatic work can help support milk flow. It is not a standalone fix for supply issues, but it can be a helpful piece of the puzzle, especially when combined with proper feeding support.

Scar Mobilization After C-Section

A C-section is a major abdominal surgery. The scar you see on the surface is only part of the story. Beneath it, layers of tissue are healing and sometimes binding together in ways that can restrict movement or cause discomfort.

Scar mobilization is a gentle, targeted technique that works on the tissue around the incision once it has healed enough. The goal is to improve mobility, reduce tightness, and prevent long-term adhesions.

Women often report less pulling or tugging in the abdomen, better posture, and improved core engagement after this type of work. It can also make a difference in how the scar looks and feels over time.

“When you see us right when the scar starts to form, we have certain techniques that we do it help it lay flat and ensure it doesn’t get stuck down,” Becky Impens, LMT, CLT, CNA, CCST, at Via Medical Massage, explains. “When that scar gets adhered down after a year or two, it can actually cause pain and restriction. We can come in and help loosen that up, so when you pull it doesn’t hurt.”

This is not about rushing the healing process. It is about supporting it in a way that leads to better long-term function.

Deep Tissue and Trigger Point Work for Postural Pain

Postpartum posture is a real thing. Feeding, rocking, carrying, and lifting a baby all day can put strain on your neck, shoulders, and lower back. Add in weakened core muscles, and it is easy to see why so many women feel constant tension.

Therapeutic massage, including deep tissue and trigger point work, focuses on those overworked areas. It helps release tight muscles, improve range of motion, and reduce the kind of pain that builds up over time.

This is not about pushing through pain with aggressive pressure. It is about working at the right depth for your body, at the right time in your recovery. Some sessions may be lighter and more restorative. Others may focus more deeply on specific problem areas. The goal is always the same. Help you move better and feel more comfortable in your body.

Cranial Work for Headaches, TMJ, and Anxiety

Hormones, stress, and lack of sleep can create the perfect storm for headaches and jaw tension. Many postpartum women deal with tightness in the jaw, frequent headaches, or a general sense of being on edge.

Cranial work, including techniques that address the head, neck, and jaw, can help calm the nervous system while relieving physical tension. TMJ-focused massage can reduce clenching and improve jaw mobility. Headache massage can ease pressure and improve circulation in the areas that tend to hold stress.

There is also a broader effect. These techniques help shift your body out of a constant stress response. When your nervous system gets a chance to settle, anxiety can feel more manageable. You may sleep better, think more clearly, and feel more like yourself again.

When to Start Postpartum Massage

At Via Medical Massage, one of our core beliefs is working with your healthcare provider to get the help you need. We’ll work with the timeline provider by your OBGYN.

In general, there’s usually a six-week waiting period after giving birth before you should consider massage. One of our partners, Dr. Alyssa Rutan, OBGYN in Lincoln, Nebraska, explains: “We really want to allow the body’s natural healing capacity without any sort of intervention. After six weeks, I highly encourage pelvic floor physical therapy, massage therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy to help get the body strong and also help to assist the patient in any changes that are occurring postpartum, such as enlargement of the breast from nursing and getting their core muscles strong.”

It’s also important that your postpartum massage therapist understands the unique aspects required for a woman’s body that is healing. That’s why many of our therapists have taken extra steps to get certified in postpartum massage.

Why Postpartum Massage Matters

The postpartum period is often treated like a quick transition back to normal life. In reality, it is a critical window for healing. What you do during this time can affect how your body feels months or even years later.

Medical massage gives you a way to address issues early instead of letting them turn into chronic problems. Swelling that never fully resolves, scars that stay tight, or pain that becomes part of your daily routine do not have to be the outcome.

At Via Medical Massage, the focus is on meeting you where you are. Whether you need gentle lymphatic work, targeted pain relief, or support for stress and anxiety, the approach is tailored to your recovery.

You have done something incredible. Taking care of your body afterward is not extra. It is part of the process. We have two locations in Lincoln and one in Omaha (Elkhorn) to help women recovering after childbirth feel better. Review our list of especially-trained massage therapists and book a session today.
