Getting sick has a way of making everything feel worse, including tight muscles, headaches, and that heavy, run-down feeling. So it’s normal to wonder if a massage might help you feel better. As we’re getting into the peak of the 2025/2026 flu season, this question comes up a lot – “Should I cancel my massage appointment if I have a cold or the flu?”

The short answer is that sometimes massage can help, and sometimes it absolutely should wait. The key is knowing where that line is and why it matters. While nothing in this article should replace the advice and guidance of your healthcare provider, we can help unblur the lines a bit more.

Can I Get a Massage If I Have a Cold?

It depends on what kind of cold you have and how your body feels overall. A mild head cold with a runny nose, slight congestion, and no fever may not automatically rule out massage. In those cases, gentle work can help relieve neck tension, sinus pressure, and stress that tends to pile on when you feel run down.

That said, if your cold includes body aches, chills, fatigue, or chest congestion, massage should wait. Those symptoms suggest your immune system is actively fighting something. Massage increases circulation, which can amplify that drained, wiped-out feeling instead of helping you bounce back.

A good rule of thumb is simple. If you would hesitate to go to work, attend an event, or sit next to someone for an hour, you should not be on a massage table.

Can I Get a Massage If I Have the Flu?

No. If you have the flu, massage is not appropriate. The flu is highly contagious, often comes with fever and body aches, and puts significant stress on your system. Massage will not shorten the illness or flush it out of your body.

In fact, massage during the flu can make symptoms worse. Increased circulation may intensify fever, dizziness, and fatigue. There is also a real risk of spreading illness to your therapist and others in the clinic.

If you have been diagnosed with the flu or suspect you have it, cancel your appointment and rest. Massage becomes more helpful once you are clearly on the other side of the illness.

Can I Get a Massage If I Have a Sinus or Upper Respiratory Infection?

Sinus and upper respiratory infections sit in a gray area. If you have sinus pressure without fever and are no longer contagious, a gentle massage may help relieve facial tension, jaw tightness, and neck stiffness. Many people hold significant tension in these areas when sinus issues linger.

If symptoms include fever, colored nasal discharge, severe fatigue, or chest involvement, massage should be postponed. If you are on antibiotics for a sinus infection, most medical massage providers recommend waiting at least 48 to 72 hours after starting treatment and only proceeding if symptoms are improving.

When Am I Healthy Enough to Get a Massage?

You are generally healthy enough for a massage when acute symptoms have resolved, and your energy is returning. That usually means no fever for at least 24 hours, reduced congestion, stable breathing, and the ability to get through the day without feeling wiped out.

Post-illness massage can be beneficial. After days of coughing, poor sleep, or bed rest, muscles often feel stiff and sore. A gentle massage can support relaxation, ease lingering tension, and help you feel like yourself again. This is especially true when sessions are adjusted to be lighter and shorter at first.

What Happens If I Get a Massage When I’m Sick?

Getting a massage while actively sick can backfire. Instead of relief, many people feel worse afterward. Common risks include:

  • Increased fatigue or weakness
  • Worsening congestion or dizziness
  • Intensified fever or chills
  • Delayed recovery
  • Greater risk of spreading illness to others

Massage is meant to support healing, not compete with your immune system while it is under pressure.

Why Do I Sometimes Feel Sick the Day After a Massage?

Feeling off after a massage does not always mean you were sick. Massage can temporarily lower blood pressure, shift fluid levels, and release tension that your body has been holding onto. This can cause mild headache, fatigue, or flu-like feelings for a day.

Dehydration also plays a role. Massage moves fluid through the body, and if you are already under-hydrated, you may feel sluggish afterward. Poor sleep, stress, and deep tissue work can all contribute as well.

If symptoms are intense or last more than a day, that is a sign the session may have been too much for your system at that time.

Can Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage Help After Illness?

Yes, in the right timing. Manual lymphatic drainage massage can be helpful during recovery, not during active infection. This technique uses very light pressure to encourage lymph movement and reduce swelling.

After illness, MLD may help with lingering congestion, fluid retention, and that heavy, sluggish feeling some people experience. It should only be performed by a properly trained provider and avoided entirely if fever or active infection is present.

At Via Medical Massage, we have MLD-trained therapists at our Lincoln and Omaha locations.

Where the “No Massage When Sick Line” Is Drawn

Most healthcare providers will say that if you have a fever or active infection, you should avoid massage. If you’re not feeling well, please speak with your primary care physician to get massage clearance. We understand that illnesses can happen quickly, and we’ll work with you to reschedule.

Our therapists appreciate your concern for taking care of yourself and reducing the risk of spreading illnesses to our staff and other members. If you have any questions about your massage appointment and current health status, reach out to us immediately.

You should be relieved to know that we do a full clean after every massage session and change the sheets, ensuring safety for clients and staff. If you have some lingering congestion, ask your Via Medical Massage therapist to add some eucalyptus oil to the headrest to get pressure from building up when you’re facing down.
