Massage after Cosmetic, Orthopedic,
Reconstructive or General Surgeries

Recovery from surgery can feel like an overwhelming journey, filled with uncertainty about healing timelines, frustrating mobility limitations, and the constant ebb and flow of swelling and discomfort. Whether you’re healing from cosmetic surgery, orthopedic surgery, or reconstructive surgery, the path to feeling like yourself again can seem longer and more challenging than expected. You want to make progress in physical therapy, return to work, and get back to the life you love with your family – but some days, it feels like your body isn’t cooperating as quickly as you’d hoped.

That’s where our specially trained post-surgical massage therapists step in as your experienced guides and advocates. We understand the intricate details of your surgical precautions and create a safe, nurturing environment where you can truly relax while staying within your movement and positioning restrictions. Our skilled hands work to manage swelling, address scar tissue, and ease the muscle tension that comes from modified postures during recovery. We serve as an extra set of eyes for your surgical and rehabilitation teams, supporting your treatment compliance while providing much-needed relief from the clinical healthcare environment. Through our specialized post-surgical massage therapy, we help you navigate the challenges of recovery with greater comfort and confidence, ultimately helping you achieve better results in physical therapy and a smoother return to your daily activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my private insurance cover my massage?

Unfortunately, this is very rare. We have had success having massages covered by auto insurance after a car accident, but private medical insurance is very fickle. We recommend setting up an HSA or FSA if your company gives you the option.

Can I use my HSA/FSA for massage?

Yes! We will provide all necessary treatment documents and receipts to submit to your HSA/FSA.

How soon after surgery can I get a massage?

The timing varies depending on your specific procedure and your surgeon’s recommendations. Generally, we can begin gentle lymphatic work as early as 48-72 hours post-surgery, but we always require clearance from your surgeon before starting any bodywork. More intensive massage techniques typically begin 2-6 weeks post-surgery, again with your surgeon’s approval.

Is post-surgical massage painful?

Not at all! Our approach is extremely gentle, especially in the early stages of healing. We work within your comfort level and surgical restrictions, focusing on light touch techniques that help manage swelling and promote healing. You should feel supported and relaxed during your session, never uncomfortable or in pain.

Will massage help reduce my swelling?

Yes, specialized post-surgical massage techniques, particularly Manual Lymphatic Drainage, can significantly help reduce postoperative swelling. This gentle approach helps stimulate your lymphatic system, encouraging the body to process excess fluid more efficiently and often providing noticeable relief from swelling-related discomfort.

How often should I receive a post-surgical massage?

The frequency depends on your specific surgery and stage of healing. Initially, we might recommend 2-3 sessions per week to help manage acute swelling and discomfort. As you progress in your healing, we typically adjust to once weekly or bi-weekly sessions. We’ll create a customized treatment plan based on your individual needs and recovery goals.

What if I have drains, staples, or other medical devices in place?

Our therapists are specially trained to work safely around surgical sites, including areas with drains, staples, or other medical devices. We modify our techniques and positioning to ensure your comfort and safety while still providing effective treatment. We’re experienced in working with various post-surgical situations and always prioritize your safety.

Can post-surgical massage help with my scar?

Absolutely! Once your incision is fully closed and cleared by your surgeon, specialized scar tissue massage can help improve the appearance and mobility of your surgical scar. These techniques can help prevent excessive scar tissue formation, reduce adhesions, and improve tissue flexibility. Early intervention with appropriate scar massage can lead to better long-term outcomes.

How is post-surgical massage different from regular massage?

Post-surgical massage requires specialized training and knowledge of surgical procedures, healing stages, and contraindications. Our therapists understand surgical protocols, positioning requirements, and how to safely work with healing tissues. We use specific techniques like manual lymphatic drainage and scar tissue mobilization, and we carefully coordinate with your healthcare team to ensure our work supports your overall recovery plan. Unlike regular massage, every session is customized to your surgical precautions and current stage of healing.

Help, I think I have fibrosis! What can you do to help me?

Fibrosis is common after many surgical procedures, and is especially prevalent after liposuction. You may feel fibrosis where the liposuction cannula was placed, and this can feel like “lumps and bumps” under your skin. We perform special techniques using our hands and tools to soften the fibrosis, and many clients report feeling a difference after just a couple of sessions. We may also recommend special compression garments and foam inserts to assist in softening fibrotic areas.

Do you sell compression garments?

We do not sell compression at this time, however, we can assist you in selecting the best compression for your situation. We also have partnered with physical therapists who are certified to fit custom compression should you have the need. We do sell other products related to post-op care.

I got my surgery out of the state/country. Can you help me remove drains or other medical devices?

It is out of our scope of practice to remove medical devices. Please be sure to coordinate with your surgeon on how you will navigate these situations.

I have a fever, infection, or seroma after my surgery. Can I still get a massage?

If you have a fever or suspect an infection, please call your surgeon immediately. We deal with seromas on a case-by-case basis. A large seroma will need to be drained by your surgeon. If you have a small seroma, we will generally work around it and monitor it, and refer you back to your doctor if deemed necessary.

My post-op instructions require me to avoid certain positions (ie, sitting/laying) for a period of time. Are you still able to massage me?

Yes! We have a medical-grade adjustable table that can be positioned in a variety of ways. We use several variations of bolstering systems to make you comfortable. We are familiar with the most common surgical positioning restrictions and have been able to accommodate them accordingly.

Do you offer massage packages for surgeries?

Yes! We sell packages in quantities of 5 or 10 sessions: with either option you will save $10 per session.
