Massage During Active Cancer
and Early Remission

Cancer is an overwhelming journey filled with countless appointments, invasive treatments, and constant uncertainty. You may feel like your body is no longer your own, as it endures poking, prodding, and the toll of treatment. At Via Medical Massage, we understand the weight of this journey. That’s why we’re here to offer a different path—one that prioritizes your comfort, reduces anxiety, and helps you reconnect with your body. Our team of highly trained therapists specializes in oncology massage, providing a safe, gentle, and compassionate space where you can find solace amidst the chaos. Whether you’re seeking relief from the side effects of cancer treatment or simply a moment of peace, we’re here to guide you.

During active cancer treatment, our focus is on easing the challenges you face daily. We address anxiety, peripheral neuropathy, and the overwhelming stress of your body’s battle with cancer. For those in remission, we shift our approach to meet the needs of recovery—helping manage lymphedema, improve range of motion after surgery, and ease the discomfort of scars and sore muscles. Each session is tailored to where you are in your journey, ensuring that you feel cared for, understood, and safe every step of the way. At Via Medical Massage, we walk beside you as you reclaim your strength and well-being.

This technique is performed using gentle and specific strokes toward the direction of your body's lymph nodes. It is ideal for reducing congestion or pain from trauma and inflammatory conditions. Manual Lymphatic Drainage also promotes a healthy immune system by filtering excess waste in the body. This technique is appropriate for those with an existing diagnosis of lymphedema, acute swelling from sports injuries, pregnancy-related swelling, lower extremity swelling disorders like venous insufficiency, and inflammatory conditions like RA and fibromyalgia.

Massage therapy for clients who are actively undergoing cancer treatment, or who are recently in remission

A thorough assessment will be performed to determine modalities to be used, comfortable positioning, and goals for treatment. Oncology massage may include lymphatic drainage, scar tissue mobilization, and trigger point release to improve range of motion. Gentler techniques may be used for those undergoing chemotherapy or radiation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my private insurance cover my massage?

Unfortunately, this is very rare. We have had success having massages covered by auto insurance after a car accident, but private medical insurance is very fickle. We recommend setting up an HSA or FSA if your company gives you the option.

Can I use my HSA/FSA for massage?

Yes! We will provide all necessary treatment documents and receipts to submit to your HSA/FSA.

Do I need permission from my doctor for Oncology Massage?

Yes, we recommend communicating with your oncology or surgical team before beginning massage therapy. We are happy to connect with your doctor as well to ensure that the treatment is safe and appropriate for your unique medical situation.

How will I be positioned after my breast surgery?

You will be positioned on your back in a reclined and supported position to ensure safety and comfort while respecting surgical procedures and any postoperative sensitivities.

Is oncology massage safe during active cancer treatment?

Yes, oncology massage is specifically designed to be gentle and safe during all stages of cancer treatment. Our therapists are trained to adapt techniques to your individual needs and health status, avoiding areas of concern like surgical sites or medical devices.

What are the benefits of post-mastectomy massage?

Post-mastectomy massage can help improve shoulder mobility, manage lymphedema, reduce scar tissue adhesions, and relieve neck and shoulder tension caused by surgical positioning. It also helps you reconnect with your body after surgery.

I think I might have lymphedema. Can you help with this?

Our therapists are trained in Manual Lymphatic Drainage techniques that can help manage lymphedema and reduce swelling. We recommend that you first see a Certified Lymphedema Therapist that specializes in Complete Decongestive Therapy; this is usually a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist or Nurse. They can get you fitted for compression and walk you through the appropriate exercises and lifestyle modifications to manage lymphedema. From there, we can provide supplemental treatment in the way of Lymphatic Drainage and other pain relieving modalities.

What does a typical Oncology Massage session involve?

A session begins with an assessment to determine your goals and current physical needs. The treatment plan may include gentle scar massage, Lymphatic Drainage, and relaxation techniques, all tailored to your stage of recovery and personal comfort. For those in active treatment, shorter sessions and gentler modalities may be appropriate so as to not overwhelm your system.

Will massage therapy interfere with my cancer treatment or recovery?

Not at all. Oncology massage is designed to complement your medical care, not interfere with it. We take every precaution to ensure that your massage therapy aligns with your overall treatment plan. Oncology Massage has been shown to assist with the pain, anxiety, and fatigue associated with cancer treatments. Once in remission, Oncology Massage can be a bridge to reclaiming your mobility and energy.
