Effective Massage Therapies
to Manage Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can be incredibly isolating and make you feel invisible. It can be difficult for friends and family to understand what you are going through, as chronic pain often cannot be physically seen on the outside. At Via Medical Massage, we validate you by carefully listening to your whole story and seeking to understand all the areas of your life affected by chronic pain.

We will walk you through several massage options for chronic pain, such as manual lymphatic drainage, therapeutic massage, or visceral massage. Our therapists have taken special training to treat headaches and back pain and manage inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. We will take a hands-on approach to your treatment and guide you to other pain relief resources for maximum benefit, such as other pain providers and massage and wellness tools.

Watch the video below to learn more about our approach to addressing chronic pain symptoms through our specialized medical massage therapies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my private insurance cover my massage?

Unfortunately, this is very rare. We have had success having massages covered by auto insurance after a car accident, but private medical insurance is very fickle. We recommend setting up an HSA or FSA if your company gives you the option.

Can I use my HSA/FSA for massage?

Yes! We will provide all necessary treatment documents and receipts to submit to your HSA/FSA.

Do I need a referral or script from my doctor?

No. You can make an appointment without any doctor referral, however we may touch base with your doctor if we have any questions about your care. If you have been in a car accident, you will need a script for medical massage to be reimbursed by auto insurance.

I have been in a car accident. How will medical massage help me and what steps do I need to take to get reimbursed by my car insurance?

Medical Massage will help with the soft tissue pain experienced from a car accident, particularly from whiplash. To be reimbursed by either your car insurance, or the car insurance of the person who hit you, you must get a script for a medical massage from your primary care, urgent care, or pain doctor. See our blog post for more details on how this process works, and what questions to ask your insurance adjuster.

Can you work with the rest of my pain team, like my Chiropractor and Physical Therapist?

Yes! With your permission, we will touch base with your Chiropractor, Physical/Occupational Therapist, and/or Pain Physician to coordinate your plan of care.

How does massage work to help with chronic pain?

Chronic pain puts people into a state of “fight or flight”. Tissues, joints, and muscles that are under constant pain usually lack movement and blood flow. Our massage techniques are designed to put you into a state of rest and relaxation by bringing more oxygen, blood, and movement to affected areas. Everybody’s nervous system is different…some people with chronic pain are highly sensitive and will respond to slower, gentler therapies such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Others do well with deeper modalities. No matter the technique, our input tells your brain to move more blood to an area, and tells your nerves to turn pain signals down. Our goal is to have the effects last long enough to get through several weeks with minimal to no pain.

How does Manual Lymphatic Drainage help with autoimmune and inflammatory disorders?

Your lymphatic system acts as your body’s natural garbage disposal, clearing waste and protecting against disease. When you’re inflamed, your lymphatic system works harder to remove waste and toxins. Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps by gently and effectively moving these byproducts through your body. Its slow, rhythmic technique also soothes your nervous system, reducing pain and promoting relaxation.

Can I get a massage after a steroid/cortisone shot?

Yes! After receiving a steroid or cortisone injection, it’s best to wait 24–48 hours before getting a massage to allow the medication to settle and reduce the risk of irritation. We will avoid deep pressure or direct work on the injection site for at least a week, as the area may be tender. Techniques like Manual Lymphatic Drainage may aid in reducing swelling if present, and we may work on the muscles around the injection site to ease tension and support relaxation.

I can’t lay comfortably on my stomach or on my back due to pain. How can you position me to receive a massage?

We have an amazing massage table that essentially turns into a recliner, taking all pressure off of your low back and allowing you to receive treatment comfortably. We can perform an entire massage in this position, and still target problem muscles on your back side. We also have the option to perform a massage in “side-lying”, where we position you on your side bolstered with a body pillow(s).

How often should I get a massage for headaches and TMJ pain?

Most of our clients see us once per month for headache and TMJ pain management. Those who suffer from migraines may need more regular sessions when we have determined that muscular tension is the trigger for the migraines.
